Dear Mr Miliband,
I am writing on behalf of Protect Our NHS, a local group which is campaigning against the privatisation of NHS services in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.
I thought you should know that our members were shocked that the Labour Party’s recent election broadcast did not say a single word about what Labour would do for the country in relation to the National Health Service. Inevitably this gave the impression that Labour has nothing to offer or, worse still, that you are keeping quiet because many Blairite MPs would like to continue the process of privatising NHS services.
With regard to your election leaflet, this has a small section emphasising that you can’t trust the Tories with the NHS (true) and referring to staff reductions and the crisis in A & E (also true). However, when a third of NHS Foundation Trusts are in financial difficulty (often caused by unsustainable PFI contracts), the crisis is much bigger than your leaflet suggests. We are dismayed that your leaflet does not contain any pledge to end the privatisation of NHS services.
Given that this is a time – specifically today – when people are voting to elect MEPs – and that the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership could make privatisation of the NHS irreversible – we want to know whether Labour will seek to protect the NHS from being taken over by huge profit-making American health corporations.
Your silence on this issue is profoundly worrying.
Re-instating a comprehensive and equitable National Health Service, based on the re-instatement of the legal duty on the Secretary of State to provide this, could be a huge vote-winner for Labour at the general election, especially as health services are already falling apart.
We believe it is the issue that would return a Labour government.
From our ongoing contact with the public, it is important that you’re aware that there is a large and growing network of people who are absolutely determined to resist the privatisation of the NHS and who are committed to expose the lies and corruption behind the Government’s health reforms. They are people who should be your natural supporters, but who don’t know where you stand on this crucial issue.
Please read our manifesto which can be found on our blog at: http://www.protectournhs.wordpress.com.
Meanwhile I look forward to your response.
